Required CE Hours for Renewal
Resident Producers
- Must complete 24 hours of continuing education including a minimum of 3 hours of Ethics by the deadline.
- Resident producers should complete their CE hours at least one week in advance of their expiration date.
- Producers with reduced compliance requirements (15 hours)
- Must complete 12 hours in the line of authority held and 3 hours of Ethics. This applies only to those producers who were granted a reduced CE compliance prior to January 1, 2010.
Non resident
- Non-resident agents may comply by meeting the requirements of their home state.
Multi-line Producers
- Property and Casualty and Life, Accident and Health
- Must complete 24 hours of CE credits. A minimum of 8 credit hours must be completed in each line of authority and a minimum of 3 credit hours of Ethics.
- Multi-line producers with reduced compliance requirements (15 hours)
- Must complete 6 hours in each line of authority and 3 hours of Ethics.This applies only to those producers who were granted a reduced CE compliance prior to January 1, 2010.

Long Term Care Training
- An individual may not sell, solicit, or negotiate long term care insurance unless the individual is licensed as an insurance producer for Accident and Health or Life.
- Must complete a one-time training course by or before June 30, 2009 and ongoing training every 24 months thereafter.
- The one-time training shall be no less than 8 hours and the ongoing training shall be no less than 4 hours.

Annuity Suitability Training
- An insurance producer shall not sell, solicit, or negotiate an annuity product unless the producer:
- is authorized as an insurance producer for life insurance products;
- has adequate knowledge of the product to recommend the annuity;
- has completed a one-time 4 hour training course;
- is in compliance with the insurer’s standards for product training.

Exemptions
- Producers
- Effective May 27, 2022, producers may now apply for CE exemption if you are 65 years of age or older AND have 25 or more years of licensure. The online application is available on our website on the CE page.
- Non-Resident
- Nonresident producers are not required to comply with CE in South Carolina.
- Limited line insurance producers
- Limited line credit insurance producers

License Term
Each two-year period ending with the producer's month and year of birth. Producers born in an even numbered year must comply by the end of the birth month in even numbered years. Producers born in an odd numbered year must comply by the end of the birth month in odd numbered years.

Final Exam
- Final exams are required to be monitored by a disinterested third party who is not related to the producer, is not his immediate supervisor, or his employee.
- Final exams are closed book.
- A score of 70% or above is required for the examinee to pass the examination.

Certificate of Completion
To get your certificate of completion, log in to our website using your username and password. Then, look at the menu on the left and find "Course History." Your course history will list the courses you passed or failed. If you passed a course, you'll see a "Print certificate" button on the right, allowing you to print your certificate for your records.

How are Hours Reported
We report your credits through SBS, a state-approved third party vendor, within one business day (except holidays, reporting will be done on next business day). The department receives the credits from SBS and recognizes the date you passed/completed the exam as the date of completion. It is not based upon the day we report the hours to them.

Course Repetition
If you successfully complete an approved course, you may not repeat the course and receive certification within 2 years and 1 day of its original completion date.

Carry-over Hours
Up to 18 CE hours in excess of the CE compliance period may be carried over and applied to the next compliance period; Ethics hours will not carryover.
