Required CE Hours for Renewal
Producers
- Must complete 15 credits of Continuing Education (CE) during each two year licensing period.
- Of the 15 credit hours of instruction required, the licensee shall satisfactorily complete courses or programs of instruction or attend seminars, as the superintendent may approve, that provide:
- at least one hour of Insurance Law instruction.
- at least one hour of ethics and professionalism instruction.
- at least one hour of diversity, inclusion, and elimination of bias instruction.
- at least one hour of flood insurance instruction if the licensee is licensed to sell one or more lines of property/casualty insurance.
- and at least three hours of enhanced flood insurance instruction if the licensee sells flood insurance through the NFIP.
- These requirements shall apply to a licensee whose license renews on or after April 1, 2022.

Special Training/Education Requirements (LTC, Flood, Ethics, others)
Flood Insurance Training
- All New York licensed resident insurance producers who sell flood insurance policies through the NFIP must comply with the minimum training requirements
- At least 3 hours of enhanced flood insurance instruction if the licensee sells flood insurance through the NFIP.
- One or more lines of Property/Casualty
- At least 1 hour of flood insurance instruction if the licensee is licensed to sell one or more lines of property/casualty insurance.

Long Term Care Training
- Has completed a one-time training course by July 1, 2009. Producers who sell, solicit or negotiate long term care insurance will also be required to complete ongoing long-term care insurance training every 24 months thereafter.
- Initial Training
- Shall be no less than eight hours.
- Ongoing Training
- Shall be no less than four hours every 24 months.

Exemptions
- Non-Resident
- CE is not required for a nonresident licensee if they are currently compliant in their home state.
- Active Military Duty
- The Department will grant an exemption from the requirements of continuing education to all those licensees called to active military duty during the term of their license(s).
- Independent Adjusters (Resident or Non-Resident)
- Are not subject to the continuing education requirements.
- Public Adjuster
- A candidate for the public adjuster license may wave the education requirement if he/she were regularly employed in the insurance industry for no less than one year in duties involving sales, underwriting or claims.

License Term
- Producer licensing term is on a biennial period.
- Effective with insurance producer licenses issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2007 the expiration dates for new and existing individual licensees will be biennial on the last day of the birth month of the producer, and for business entity licensees biennial on May 31. If the term of the license for new producers or those transitioning to the biennial license would be less than 18 months if renewed the second birth month (or May 31 for agencies) following issuance or renewal, the license will instead expire the following birth month (or May 31 for agencies).
- The Individual/TBA License is issued with an expiration date determined by date of birth:
- If you were born in an even numbered year, your license expires on your birthday in an even numbered year.
- If you were born in an odd numbered year, your license expires on your birthday in an odd numbered year.
- Your license will expire on your birthday regardless of the length of licensing period.

Final Exam
- If you choose to complete a self-study course, you must take and pass a final exam to receive credit.
- Final exams are closed book. No monitor required
- A passing grade of at least 70% required to pass the course.

Certificate of Completion
To get your certificate of completion, log in to our website using your username and password. Then, look at the menu on the left and find "Course History." Your course history will list the courses you passed or failed. If you passed a course, you'll see a "Print certificate" button on the right, allowing you to print your certificate for your records.

How are Hours Reported
We report your credits to the NY DFS within one business day (except holidays, reporting will be done on next business day). The department recognizes the date you passed/completed the exam as the date of completion. It is not based upon the day we report the hours to them.

Course Repetition
Credits must be accumulated during the renewal period. Once a licensee has completed a course for CE credits, that course may never be used to renew the license again. The Provider must review its records to confirm if the licensee has ever completed a course.

Carry-over Hours
- CE credits may not be carried over from one term to another.
- In the case of relicensing, you may use credits accumulated in the previous licensing period, plus any completed up to the date that the re-licensing application is submitted.
