Required CE Hours for Renewal
Producer
- Newly Licensed Insurance Producer
- Must complete 60 hours of continuing education credits prior to their initial license renewal date. Must also complete a program of instruction or attend a seminar on Ethics equivalent to 3 classroom hours of instruction.
- Licensed Producer

Must complete 45 hours of continuing education credits during the 36-month period prior to license renewal. Must also complete a program of instruction or attend a seminar on Ethics equivalent to 3 classroom hours of instruction.
- Licensees are encouraged to take at least 1 credit hour of approved instruction in each line for which they are licensed.
- Effective December 1, 2020, Massachusetts resident producers and adjusters who successfully complete approved continuing education courses in reciprocal states or online will receive continuing education credit for such courses in Massachusetts.
Public Insurance Adjusters
- Required to fulfill 15 hours of continuing education to maintain their licenses; public insurance adjuster courses only.

Special Training/Education Requirements

Annuity Training
- A producer who engages in the sale of annuity products shall complete a one-time training course for 4 CE credits, approved by the Commissioner and provided by a continuing education provider.
- A producer who has completed an annuity training course approved by the Commissioner shall, by June 1, 2023, complete either:
- A new 4-credit training course approved by the Commissioner; or
- An additional one time 1 credit course approved by the Commissioner and provided by a continuing education provider on appropriate sales practices, replacement and disclosure requirements

Flood Insurance Training
- Property, Casualty, or Personal Lines
- All insurance producers who sell flood insurance through the NFIP must complete a one-time course related to the NFIP which will provide 3 hours of continuing education credit.
- Resident Insurance Producers (Property, Casualty, or Personal Lines)
- Producers who do not currently sell flood insurance through NFIP, but who intend to do so in the future, is required to complete the one-time course related to the NFIP which will provide 3 hours of continuing education credit prior to selling flood insurance through the NFIP.

Long Term Care Training
- An individual shall not sell, solicit or negotiate Long Term Care insurance unless the individual is licensed as an insurance producer for health, accident or sickness and has completed a one-time training course.
- The one-time training requirement shall be not less than eight (8) hours and the ongoing training required shall be not less than four (4) hours every 24 months.
- For those producers who have already taken a six (6) to eight (8) hour Long Term Care training course; they will now need to take an additional two (2) hours course in Long Term Care with the MassHealth requirements.

Exemptions
- The continuing education requirements shall not apply to persons who are licensed as:
- Non-residents who also possess an equivalent resident license or licenses issued by a state in which they are resident and which state has continuing educational requirements with respect to such license or licenses, and who are certified by their resident state as being in good standing.
- Persons licensed in Massachusetts prior to April 4, 1983, except for those persons who although licensed prior to April 4, 1983, amended their licenses after that date by passing an insurance examination for an additional line or lines of insurance, and except for those persons who were unlicensed for more than one year immediately prior to April 4, 1983.
- Auto club agents
- Insurance producers who are licensed to engage only in the sale of the following limited lines of authority: Travel Insurance and Credit Insurance.
- Insurance Advisers
- Fraternal agents
- Any person holding a resident license for which an examination is not required.
- Those on military active duty.
- Public Adjusters
- Public Insurance Adjusters are not required to take an MA approved Ethics course.
- Only Public Insurance Adjusters that are residents of Massachusetts are required to comply with Massachusetts Continuing Education Credit Hour requirements.

License Term
- The first renewal date will be less than three (3) years following the date of original issuance of a license, as a license renews on your birth date on a triennial basis.
- Public Insurance Adjuster licenses renew on a triennial basis from original date of licensure.

Final Exam
- Final exams need to be monitored by a disinteresed third party.
- Final exams are CLOSED book.
- A passing grade of at least 70% required to pass the course.

Certificate of Completion
To get your certificate of completion, log in to our website using your username and password. Then, look at the menu on the left and find "Course History." Your course history will list the courses you passed or failed. If you passed a course, you'll see a "Print certificate" button on the right, allowing you to print your certificate for your records.

How are Hours Reported
We report your credits through SBS, a state-approved third party vendor, within one business day (except holidays, reporting will be done on next business day). The department receives the credits from SBS and recognizes the date you passed/completed the exam as the date of completion. It is not based upon the day we report the hours to them.

A licensee may not repeat a course for CE credit within a three-year period.

Excess classroom hours accumulated during any one thirty-six month period may be carried forward to the next thirty-six month period only.
