KY Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

Required CE Hours for Renewal

  • Agents

    • Agents must complete 24 hours that includes at least 3 hours of ethics.
    • Any individual holding multiple licenses that require continuing education will complete the required hours, and credit applies to both licenses.
  • Independent and Public Adjusters

    • Must complete 24 hours that includes at least 3 hours of ethics.
  • Life Settlement Brokers

    • Must also complete 24 hours that includes at least 3 hours of ethics, and at least 3 hours in life settlement course concentration.
    • An individual licensed as either a life settlement broker or an insurance agent authorized to operate as a life settlement broker shall complete twenty-four (24) hours of continuing education approved by the commissioner, which shall include a minimum of:
      • Three (3) hours in life insurance;
      • Three (3) hours in life settlements; and
      • Three (3) hours in ethics.

Special Training/Education Requirements

  • Flood Insurance Training

    • A resident individual agent who holds a property and casualty line of authority selling flood insurance under the National Flood Insurance Program shall complete three (3) hours of training in accordance with the Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2004
  • Long Term Care/ LTC Partnership Training

    • A resident individual agent selling, soliciting, or negotiating insurance products that qualify under the Long-Term Care Partnership Insurance Program shall complete eight (8) hours of initial long-term care insurance training, and four (4) hours of additional training for each biennial continuing education compliance period.
  • Annuity Training

    • An individual agent who holds a life line of authority shall successfully complete four (4) hours of initial training, prior to the sale, solicitation, or negotiation of annuities.
    • An agent who has completed an annuity training course approved by the department prior to January 1, 2022 shall, within six (6) months after January 1, 2022, complete either:
      • A new four (4) credit hour training course approved by the Department of Insurance and provided by a Department of Insurance-approved education provider; or
      • An additional one-time one (1) credit hour training course approved by the Department of Insurance and provided by a Department of Insurance-approved education provider on appropriate sales practices and replacement and disclosure requirements

Exemptions

  • Limited Lines
    • The following limited lines of authority are exempt: Surety, Travel, Limited line credit, Crop, Rental vehicle, Self-service storage space, Other limited lines, as specified by the commissioner
  • Non-Resident
    • A non-resident agent who has completed CE in their home state shall meet the CE requirements of this state.
  • Staff Adjusters
    • Staff adjusters are excluded.
  • Licensees not licensed for one (1) full year prior to the end of the applicable continuing education biennium;
  • Licensees maintaining their licenses for the sole purpose of receiving renewals or deferred commissions and providing the department with a supporting affidavit.

License Term

  • Biennial compliance date for an individual resident licensee shall be as follows:
    • A licensee whose birth date is in an even-numbered year shall satisfy requirements on or before the last day of the licensee's birth month in the even-numbered year. If the licensee has not held the license for one (1) year, the compliance date is adjusted to the next even-numbered year and each subsequent even-numbered year thereafter. If the license becomes inactive and reissued within a twelve (12) month period, the compliance date shall remain the same;
    • A licensee whose birth date is in an odd-numbered year shall satisfy requirements on or before the last day of the licensee's birth month in the odd-numbered year. If the licensee has not held the license for one (1) year, the compliance date is adjusted to the next odd-numbered year and each subsequent odd-numbered year thereafter. If the license becomes inactive and reissued within a twelve (12) month period, the compliance date shall remain the same.

Course Type Approved for Continuing Education

  • Classroom courses
  • Correspondence courses
  • Self-study courses

Final Exam

  • Final exams do not need to be monitored and are open book.
  • Shall answer correctly 70 percent of the questions to pass the exam.

Certificate of Completion

To get your certificate of completion, log in to our website using your username and password. Then, look at the menu on the left and find "Course History." Your course history will list the courses you passed or failed. If you passed a course, you'll see a "Print certificate" button on the right, allowing you to print your certificate for your records.

How are Hours Reported

We report your credits to the KY DOI within one business day (except holidays, reporting will be done on next business day). The department recognizes the date you passed/completed the exam as the date of completion. It is not based upon the day we report the hours to them.

Course Repetition

A course may only be credited one time during the biennium.

Carry-over Hours

Up to 12 carryover hours will be applied to the next compliance period as general hours.
